The tempo of modern life means that taking time to read so as to properly follow an argument seems tedious.  Moreover, current trends in communication mean that the modern mind doesn't think polemically.  Instead we read contenting ourselves with the gist of an article or idea or for the benefit of a glib quotation.  The summaries offered in “Not So Old Geezers” are an attempt to precis an author’s writing into a structure that is easily followed but still honours the quality of expression and depth of thought that the author's writing represents.
